Australian Inventions Thinking different In , the US military announced to the world that it had developed the Lockheed F Nighthawk stealth fighter, which it believed could not be detected by radar. Seeing a challenge, Australian scientists at the CSIRO speculated that if the plane could not be detected, perhaps the turbulence it made passing through air could be. The invention of the Jindalee Radar System continued a long line of Australian inventiveness. Some of the inventions, such as the notepad and power board, were so simple they beged the question as to why they had never been invented before. Perhaps their invention could be attributed to the liberation from traditional thinking that comes from living in a multicultural society. Whereas other cultures will continue with practices because it is the way things have always been done, in Australia, things are done in a diversity of ways, which makes Australians more inclined to conceive of the best way of doing things rather than just holding onto the past. Some of the inventions, such as the stump jump plough, refrigerator and dual flush toilet, were in response to Australia’s unique environmental conditions. Perhaps their invention could be seen as an example of how different environments present different challenges that require novel solutions.

By the end of the year and the following year, the demand for passage to Australia rose considerably. Rivalry between the many shipping companies intensified as they fought, through advertisements extolling the virtues of their speedy and comfortable ships, for the lucrative new emigration trade.
No doubt risks were taken with the aim of turning a quick profit, and no doubt ships were lost. Melbourne grew into a vibrant metropolis, and trade between Melbourne and Sydney prospered.

Reforming the letters service With the Australian community continuing to shift to using digital channels for communicating and transacting, the amount of addressed letters posted this year was down 9. Given this rapid rate of digital disruption, one of our primary responsibilities involves managing the decline of letters carefully, while maintaining reliable, community-wide access to our services. To this end, we reached a landmark moment with the introduction of letter service reforms at the mid-point of this financial year.
I would like to acknowledge the Federal Government for supporting the regulatory changes that were required to implement these vital reforms. The importance of those reforms to the long-term sustainability of our services cannot be under-estimated. In the short-term, letters reform was an important factor in our return to profitability this financial year.
