Chris DeVille chrisdeville March 6, – 3: What exactly has Blacc been doing these past few years, then? He is living proof that you can chase the money. That was standard fare for the era; not until he refashioned himself as a genre-flouting soul singer and signed with grimy leftfield hip-hop hub Stones Throw for solo debut Shine Through did Aloe Blacc fly his freak flag. Shine Through was bursting with ideas and dismissive of stylistic parameters — experimental, but not at the expense of songwriting. Blacc was Pharrell on a Broken Social Scene bender, a scrapbook soul man with boundless creative potential. But the Aloe Blacc of Shine Through also had limited commercial prospects.
Where are you from, and how did you get started in the music business? I came from a small town, Albany NY. I was an avid music fan, and I fell in love with hip-hop—I would write rhymes in my notebooks. During high school, I would DJ at house parties. The summer before my senior year of college in , I got a chance to intern at J Records.
Kicking off with “The Man” (a sweetly boastful single that gives a sly nod to Elton John’s “Your Song” and climbed to the top 10 on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart in early ), Lift Your Spirit reveals both Blacc’s musical adventurousness and graceful grasp of the subtleties at the heart of his folk/soul hybrid.
I like the tour poster, can I see it bigger? This one’s pretty intense, you’ve been warned: It made its debut on Record-Racks this week, who gave it some serious props, while going on to say that Solidarity “is shaping up to be the Global Grooves Album Of The Year”! Well, we’ve got some exciting news for you The songs we wrote are in a variety of Afro, Latin and Caribbean styles, all connected by a consistent thread of North American soul and jazz sensibilities.
Featuring lyrics sung in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Wolof with borrowings from French and Arabic , the pieces are unified by a common message of positive social change. After the release of our last album, the all-acoustic Rising Sun, we also wanted to return to a plugged-in sound, which gave us an excuse to dig up some of our dusty, forgotten electric instruments out of the attic again: We recorded the new songs onto a temperamental 8-track tape machine, and the whole thing resulted in one massive, heavy-hitting, ruff-and-tuff record.
It comes out September 17th , once again on Strut Records.

The music video, which was released in March, already has drawn nearly 8 million views since it’s March debut, and powerfully touches on race, discrimination, and unity, while taking us back to the civil rights era and other momentous moments in American history. The director behind the inspiring video, St. How did you know that directing music videos was your calling?
I started in high school. I was an aspiring basketball player and video technology student and needed a way to let coaches and others know I existed.
Good Things marks a shift in methodology from personal to political for Aloe Blacc, who refers to the project as his report on present conditions the misappropriation of wealth, pillaging of resources, a universal lack of compassion, and the struggle to survive.
To engage your students, you need to know what they like. What books do they like to read? What movies do they like to see? What do they do in their free time? What kind of music do they like? Having a questionnaire at the beginning of the school year is a great way to find out more about them. I like to have them create a collage mobile with their answers more on that in another post.
But this allows me to gauge what their interests are so I can create lessons that will, hopefully, engage them. Then I give them the handout and play the song again. As they listen, they pick out the devices they see and hear. I have been known to play a song three or four times with all apologies to my nearest colleagues so students can find all the “sound” devices. I use this lesson scroll down for Katy Perry’s “Firework” as one example. I use this with grade 10 and most were able to find at least 80 percent of the devices.

When it made more sense to buy the instrument, Blacc had what he later described as a “very specific moment” in his evolution as a musician. His exposure to LL Cool J in fourth grade was equally significant. I had a hip hop moment and a musician moment.
Mar 10, · Watch video · Grammy nominated musician and songwriter Aloe Blacc, left, and multi-platinum Grammy winning artist Zedd arrive to celebrate the iconic M&M’s Brand and its 75th anniversary at the official launch.
Despite a broad range of output throughout a career that dates back to the latter half of the s, the singer, songwriter, and producer has consistently maintained a blue-collar everyman quality — as enhanced by his rustic tenor voice — with most of his writing rooted in reality yet typically feel-good and uplifting in nature. Along with fellow traveler Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe made the revered independent label Stones Throw an unlikely and unintentional launching pad for sustained above-ground success.
He absorbed styles such as cumbia, merengue, and salsa in his household, and eventually hip-hop in his environment. While in elementary school, he began playing trumpet and started writing rhymes. These pursuits continued through high school. As simply Aloe, he made his recorded debut as a teenager in on Imaginary Friends, a mixtape by Exile credited then as Eksile. Aloe and Exile continued to work together as Emanon, primarily through the 12″ single format, and in released a proper album, The Waiting Room.
By this time, Aloe had fallen hard for the works of classic soul artists such as Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye, and while studying at the University of Southern California had also pored over contemporaneous folk-rock recordings.

Growing up playing the trumpet yet listening to hip-hop, Aloe Blacc acquired a diverse range of musical influences and inspirations. In the mid s, Aloe Blacc fused his love of both genres by forming Emanon, an indie rap collaboration with rap producer Exile. The pair released a set of mix tapes which combined jazz samples with hip hop beats. Emanon became a staple on the underground rap circuit, and the pair released three albums together between and

Man, working with Avicii really skewed your perception on what good taste is. Published This ain’t no “I Need a Dollar”, that’s for sure. I can never complain with this guy’s vocals. I mean, what is the point of a soul vocalist if he has a bad voice? The backing vocals are cool too. Orchestrations, sparse and under-used though they may be, are always welcome on this song. I guess that’s the bridge part of it. It ain’t even subtle.
It lasts for about exactly the same time and is impossible to have this song without it.
